This image was taken for a story that ran in the Manawatu Evening Standard on 10 October 1970. The story ran: "Fiji became an independent nation today exactly 96 years after the islands were ceded to Queen Victoria by Fiji's King Charles, handed the islands back again in a ceremony watched by many descendants of the Fijian King. In Palmerston North, a Fijian Independence Day celebration was held on the evening of October 9. A welcoming ceremony in traditional style had been arranged by the Fiji students' association at Massey University. The 30 minute welcome included the presentation of a tambua (whale's tooth) to Palmerston North mayor, Desmond Black. Tambua is a symbol of authority, dignity and respect. Eight guest including Mr Black were served with the country's national drink, Kava."
