Description

This image ran in the Manawatu Evening Standard on July 11 1962 with the caption, "After being found abandoned in a city telephone box at 4.30 a.m. today, this nameless and unwanted baby boy, 10 to 20 days old, was taken to Palmerston North Hospital. Obviously happy and contented in his new surroundings, the infant has found everything - including a name. For hospital record purposes he has been christened 'Bobby'." He was discovered by Palmerston North milkman Trevor Roberts in a phone-booth near the corner of Cardiff Street and Pioneer Highway. The mother was never found and 'Bobby' was adopted out under the name Keith Mitchell, who never discovered the identity of his birth parents. For further information, see "Phonebox Baby's Unanswered Questions" by Tina White in the Manawatu Evening Standard, 28 November 2015.
