The abattoir was built in 1906 and was demolished with the use of explosives. The photograph shows the final moments of the old boiling-down house crashing to the ground. As a Palmerston North City Council owned property the land was subsequently subdivided for housing in the rapidly growing Awapuni area of Palmerston North.
