The women in the photo are Chinese New Zealanders from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia who play Mahjong for three to five hours each Monday in the kitchen of the Manawatu Chinese Association Hall at 98 Napier Road, Palmerston North. Some are new learners joining for the fun and health benefits of the game. Once denounced because of its association with gambling, Mahjong is now promoted among elderly people in many countries as a game that encourages mental agility in a social setting.
