A sentry of the 3rd Carpathian Division with a view over the destroyed monastry of Monte Cassino. The Polish Army League, founded in Palmerston North, developed a relationship with Polish soldiers through befriending the soldiers. They corresponded with them and sent parcels. The Polish soldiers reciprocated with gifts, to acknowledge their appreciation of the friendship, and New Zealand's response to the welfare of Polish children.
