Paperweight and canon shell from Polish soldier
- Description
A paperweight, with Monte Cassino in relief in white metal, and a canon shell. On the paperweight is inscribed " 1940 to 1945", "Monte Cassino 1944" and "Workshop Platoon". The base also has a plaque, "For our friends in New Zealand from Work Shop of 3 Coy Polish A.S.C." and is inscribed "Palestine, Egypt, Libia, Italy". Monte Cassino was the site in the Italian campaign during World War Two. These were two of the gifts made by Polish soldiers to give to New Zealand as an expression of their heartfelt gratitude for New Zealand's treatment of the Polish children refugees and appreciation of the great friendship shown to the soldiers through the sending of correspondence and parcels, during World War Two. This item is held by Te Manawa, Palmertson North.
