Image of inscription on Polish memorial at Monte Cassino, Italy. Reads, " For our Freedom and yours we soldiers of Poland gave our soul to God, our life to the soil of Italy, our Hearts to Poland". The Polish Army League, founded in Palmerston North, developed a relationship with Polish soldiers through befriending the soldiers. They corresponded with them and sent parcels. The Polish soldiers reciprocated with gifts, to acknowledge their appreciation of the friendship, and New Zealand's response to the welfare of Polish children.
