Sawing Timber for Railway Sleepers Along Opawe Road, Pohangina Valley
- Description
The photograph was taken 15 or chains south-west of Opawe Road, about one mile up from the junction with Pohangina Valley East Road. The men received 4/6 per sleeper, delivered at Ashhurst. The sleepers were cut from Crown Land (part of the Totara Reserve), in bush which had been partly damaged by fire two years prior. The men in this photo are (from left): unknown, unknown, unknown, unknown, Williscroft (in foreground with saw), Sam Lane (in back with auger), George Wagstaff, Ernest Wagstaff, Lawrence (with cross-cut saw), Jack Enright (with squaring axe).
