Description

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 23 June, 1959. "The coaxial cable which is at the moment being laid from Wellington to Palmerston North is very near the end of its journey, it is on its last stage now. Seen above are members of the Post and Telegraph Department feeding the cable down a manhole. At the time when this photograph was taken they were just past the Grand Hotel and now have to go just past the police station in Church Street to the new telephone exchange." Another photo associated with this article was published on the same day.
