Development began on the Victoria Esplanade in Palmerston North, named to mark Queen Victoria's 60th jubilee, in 1897. The band rotunda on the right was removed from The Square and resited in the Esplanade 1907, where it remained until demolished in 1966. The pergola on the left was built c1916-1917 and was a feature of the gardens until demolished c1940.
