Description

The photographer appears to have been standing on the top of the Grand Hotel and is looking across the Square gardens towards Rangitikei Street. The three-storey building had it's top storey removed after the 1931 earthquake. The site of the three-story building is now occupied by shops. The wooden Royal Hotel (on the opposite corner of Rangitikei Street) was replaced by the Bank of New Zealand in 1913, but is now occupied by a row of shops. The toilet and weigh-bridge (in the middle distance) appear to be under construction when this photo was made.
