This photograph shows a steam shovel being used to create a stopbank. On the rear of the original photograph is written “Bank where highest will be 17 feet 2 inches. Breath is 5 times the height. Average height of bank, 8 feet. Dredge [is] about to drop 1 ½ yards of spoil. Takes 45 seconds to dig it out and drop it. Lifts 1, 000 yards in 10 hours”.
