Description

This photograph shows a view of the Square from the corner of Main Street East to Fitzherbert Street (now Fitzherbert Avenue). It shows a few pedestrians enjoying the broad streets of the early Square and the Square Gardens. Five men are working on the railway track that ran through Main Street at the time. The original wooden All Saints Church can be seen in the top right corner of the photograph, next to the early Municipal Chambers (now Square Edge). The large building towards the top left corner of the photograph is The Bank of New Zealand. It was built in 1878 and replaced in 1902 with a brick building (shown). Malcolm and Wilton's furniture shop came into existence in 1901 after the death of J R Montague. The Evening Standard building was erected in 1891 and the Standard team moved in between 1903 and 1910.
