- Description
-
An original Lutheran Church was built in Main Street in 1882, but was shifted to the Church Street site in 1892. In 1906 it was deemed too small, so additional land was purchased, the existing church swung around to form the chancel, and in 1906 a new building was constructed between it and bell tower built 1904. This building was demolished in the 1987, and was replaced with a new brick church on the same site. Palmerston North has the largest concentration of Lutherans in New Zealand, steming from the Scandinavian settlers of the 1870s-1890s.
