John Perrin (1844-1914) was born in Nelson and came to Palmerston North in 1871. He married Matilda Montgomery, the adopted daughter of the Snelsons, in 1874. He and others established the first construction firm in Palmerston North, Merrin, Perrin and Oakley. Early constructions included the first Anglican Church and the Bon Marche Store.
