"Elephant Weighs in for Regent"

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 15 May 1989 with the caption : "Sole Brothers' Circus' Minyak rallies for the cause outside the Regent Theatre on Saturday." Minyak wore banners with slogans aimed at convincing passers-by to sign a petition to save the Regent Theatre from demolition. 1500 people signed the petition during the stunt.

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 22 June 1961 "The judging for the Massey Agricultural College "fleece of the year" took place in the college wool room yesterday and today. The 58 entries included fleeces from all major wool breeds in New Zealand - Merino, Corriedale and Romney - and had come from all over the country. The results of the judging will be released at the college's annual wool conference on July 4, 5 and 6. The photograph shows the two judges, Mr. R. Moore (Wellington, left) and Mr. D. Stewart (Christchurch, right) examining a stud Corriedale fleece from Canterbury. In the centre is Mr. A. Chadwell, a college wool instructor."

"Massey's New Zealand Record Attempt" Pushing an Iron Bedstead Around the Square

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 11 April 1961 "How many times can ten men push an iron bedstead around the Square in 16 hours. When photographed yesterday the students announced they were on their 91st circuit; they intended stopping on the 100th lap. Starting at 8 o'clock on Sunday evening, the students were divided in five teams, each having one hour pushing and pulling the bedstead. They found the railway crossing the hardest part of their trek as the castors kept coming off the frame."

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 20 March 1958, page 12: "The highlight of the North Islands secondary schools' championships was the New Zealand record-breaking 100 yards breaststroke swim by the 13 year old Wanganui Technical College pupil, G. Wallace, who set the new national time of 78.9 sec to break his own junior record set in the New Zealand Championships."

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 30 April 1958, page 5: "The cynosure of the large numbers who attended the Palmerston North Horticultural Society's chrysanthemum show, yesterday, was this outstanding exhibition of chrysanthemums arranged in the shape of a cross. The cross was formed by the garden circle of the Y.W.C.A., with the aid of Mr. D. Keen."

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 14 March 1957: "The plaque on the new city clock tower in The Square, which cause a controversy a few weeks ago, has now been replaced in its corrected form. A local monumentalist completed the job early today." The plaque reads: "The clock and chimes, christened Kerei Te Panau by Mrs W. T. Wood were opened and started on 3rd June 1906 in the Post Office by Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward P.C..K.C.M.G. Prime Minister and Postmaster General and were removed from that building after the 1942 earthquake and restarted in this tower donated by Arthur Hopwood Esq. in the year 1957."

"Record of Historical Achievement" Yuri Gagarin Circumnavigating the Earth

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 12 June 1961: Michael Hardie, of Palmerston North received a letter from Radio Moscow replying to his letter congratulating Yuri Gagarin on being the first man in space and his circumnavigation of the Earth. He also received a photograph of Yuri Gagarin and a set of the commemorative stamp issue which depicted the historical achievement.

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 15 June 1961 "The Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Minister of Finance (Mr. Seath) was the guest-speaker at a luncheon held today by the Palmerston North branch of the National Party. Current problems discussed by Mr. Seath were balance of payments, membership of the International Monetary Fund, and the European Common Market. Mr. Seath (right) is seen talking to Mr. W.H. Ken Tremaine, City Planner for PNCC

Ken Tremaine was City Planner at Palmerston North City Council from 1976 - 1994. In 1990 he was one of the five planners who drafted the Government's resource management legislation. He was later awarded a Distinguished Service Award by the New Zealand Planning Institute for his work.
