147 Rangitikei Street
- Description
Part-owner, Feilding electrical engineer, Charles Robert (‘Chas.’) Hubbard, designed this building, and F. Needham Ltd. built it in reinforced concrete. The building opened in February 1924. The workshop (behind the office block) had the most up-to-date machine shop plant then available. The firm employed 36 workers, twenty-one of whom did electrical installation work, while another eight were based in the workshop. The rest worked in sales, the showroom or the office. The firm also sold a wide range of domestic and other electrical goods.
By May 1936, Holben, Hubbard & Co. Ltd. was in liquidation, and up for sale. E.R.B Holben retained an interest in the subsequent firm (Holben Precision Engineering Co. Ltd.). The firm finally departed around 1956, being replaced by Brill & Morgan Precision & Industrial Engineers Ltd. Various firms have been in the space since then.
