Tui Buildings, 111-115 Rangitikei Street
- Description
The designer for this concrete and brick building was Robin Hood, and the builder F. Needham, at a cost of £10,181. This work included the substantial grain store that is still behind the office block. The upper façade bears the dates “1899” and “1926,” marking the firm’s foundation as Messrs Tolley & Co.’s seed and grain merchants in 1899, and the completion of this building in 1925-26. The tui motif on the upper façade was Hodder & Tolley’s well-known logo – and Tui Mill Grove in Feilding marks another of the firm’s former sites. In Hodder & Tolley’s time, the tui and other highlights on the facade were painted black, while the rest of the façade was painted in a contrasting light colour. In recent years, the ground floor façade has been ‘modernised’, the two original front entrances having originally been at either side of the building and separated by an arched window.
