Description

Opened in November 1965 as the city’s main Commercial Bank of Australia, this building makes extensive use of terrazzo stonework, both inside and out, and also on the floor of the large banking chamber. The short ‘folded plate’ entrance canopy – in this case more decorative and eye-catching than practical – was a style that James Walker and Lloyd C. Love repeated in various forms around this time. This canopy extends back inside the building to become the foyer’s ceiling. Originally the triple front windows continued to about a metre above pavement level, however, the lower set have since been replaced by shop front windows.

The CBA merged with the much larger Bank of New South Wales in 1982 under the name Westpac and continued to operate from this building. By 1987 Westpac had left this building. In the 1990s, the car sales firm Palmfield Motors operated from this building. It is now a retail shop.
