107 - 109 Rangitikei Street
- Description
Established as Hart & Keeling in 1894, the printing firm Keeling & Mundy (later K & M Print) occupied this site between 1904 and the 1980s. However this building dates to 1935, when Robin Hood called tenders to build it in reinforced concrete. The words “Keeling and Mundy”, once on the upper façade, have since been plastered over. A large skylight still lights the building’s staircase. Until Walding Street was cut through in the mid-1980s, the sole façade visible to the general public was the portion overlooking Rangitikei Street. Following that transformation, the ‘new’ Walding Street frontage was created to accommodate shops and (nowadays) two upstairs flats. The present external pillar on the street corner was also exposed at this time, and the diagonal front entrance was installed. The Robin Hood-designed (former) Hodder & Tolley/Tui building stands alongside this building.
