Australia New Zealand Bank, corner of Coleman Place and The Square
- Description
The ANZ bank building was constructed in 1910 – 1911 after a smaller wooden building on the site burnt down in 1910. It was originally named “The Bank of Australasia” and then “The Union Bank of Australia”. The ANZ occupied the ground floor, leasing the second floor, until 1981 when they moved further down Coleman Place after a new ANZ Bank opened on the corner of The Square and Broadway Ave. Coombe, Hughes and Company, Chartered accountants converted the building to accommodate retail shops. The ANZ building is listed in category 4 of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust register due to its architectural significance.
