Alexander McDonald (1829 - 1905) arrived in New Zealand in 1840. He married Annie Cameron in 1852, and they lived in the Whanganui, Rangitikei and Manawatu districts. This watercolour is reputed to show Alexander McDonald reading a document outside the Levin Courthouse during the Royal Commission into Horowhenua Block, in 1896.
