Description

David McEwen (1818-1905) married Mary Neish (1819-1876) in Scotland. They arrived in New Zealand with their eldest child in 1840. While living in the Hutt Valley David served on the District Road Board and the Provincial Council. They moved to Karere, near Palmerston North, in 1867, where David set up the first Palmerston North Post Office and served as the first Postmaster. He was also very active on committees and boards in the early years of the area, and did a great deal of work with local Māori. David and Mary had eight children - Andrew, Agnes, Helen, Henry, Thomas, Andrew, John and James.

This image is derived from a copy negative, made from a photograph loaned Michael Fitzsimons of Karere in 1970. The original photograph is not held by the Ian Matheson City Archives.
