This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 21 May, 1959. "Yesterday, with the Manawatu River in flood, men were at work placing trees and barrels of sand along the banks at a point near the end of Ruahine Street in an effort to prevent the river from eating into the stopbanks."
