Palmerston North has a diverse sporting history. .By the early 1900s, sport clubs in the city included bowls, croquet, golf, tennis, cricket, rugby, hockey and athletics. By 1969, 214 sport clubs operated in the city, reflecting high particiaption in sports at a community level.
