Ladies Rest Rooms, the Square

The Ladies Rest Rooms, built in 1937 were designed in the art deco style. They remain in use today with the addition of a men's toilets and the Palmerston North I-site attached.

Church of Christ Tent Mission Meeting

In 1931-1932 a nationally organised evangelistic Tent Mission campaign came to Palmerston North (late 1931) as part of its tour of the Churches of Christ of New Zealand. The photograph shows the congregation outside the tent at the conclusion of the campaign. The tent was pitched on open land in Main Street not far from the corner of Princess Street.

Awahou South School Pupils with Headmaster

This photograph shows the entire class of Awahou South School with their Headmaster Mr P J Patten. Awahou South School was a one-room country school in the Pohangina Valley, Manawatu opened in 1902. The school building was moved to the Manawatu Museum following the School's closure in 1972.

Demoliton of caretaker's house, A & P Showgrounds

This house, opposite the end of Cook Street, was demolished in December of 1974. The house had been moved to the Showgrounds in 1909 for use by the Caretaker. The last caretaker to live in the house was Mr E Bell who was moved into a new caretaker’s house in Pascal Street.

Peace celebrations were held in Palmerston North 19 - 21 July 1919. On Saturday 19 July at 9.30 am a 21 Gun Salute under the direction of Col. McDonald was executed. Later, speeches were given at the show grounds. J A Nash, Mayor of Palmerston North, is visible on the speaker's stand. Construction of the Mangahao Electric Power Scheme

This photograph shows the metal reinforcing in place on the outside of a tunnel being created for the Mangahao line. The Mangahao Power Station is a hydroelectric power station near the town of Shannon, Horowhenua. After being delayed by World War One, access roading and foundation testing was started by late 1919 and the station opened in November 1924. It makes use of Mangahao River, through a series of tunnels and piplines totaling 4.8 kilometers, in the Tararua Ranges. Mangahao Power Station became the power station for Wellington, Horowhenua, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and the Wairarapa. As of 2012, it is jointly owned and operated by Todd Energy and King Country Energy.

Main Street East

The large gravelled parking area was where the former railway tracks ran down Main Street, before being diverted to the edge of town in the 1960s. to the right can be seen the two storeyed Princess Hotel (see 2008N_Ho15_BUI_1712 and 2011N_Ho24_004782. The Princess Hotel, originally built as the Family Hotel by William Deards in 1874, was soon renamed and remained the Princess Hotel for most of its life. In circa 1979 this building was demolished and rebuilt as the Princess Tavern. This section of road is now State Highway 3. The view looks down towards Ruahine Street from about Kauri Street.

Southwest Corner of the Square

The Commercial Hotel on the corner of Main Street West and the Square was first built in 1881, the photograph here shows this first building. It is described in the Cyclopedia of New Zealand Vol 1, p 1183 with a verandah and balcony. It burnt down in 1900. The present hotel was built in 1935. On the far left of the photograph is James Linton's land office. It was a two story wood building without a verandah built in 1881. It was on the site formerly occupied by the Coles building (88 The Square). Linton was also Mayor of Palmerston North. The railway station and engine shed remained in the Square until 1889, it was then moved to Main Street West.

In 1956 it was renamed the Premier Department Store, when the company was taken over by the Manawatu Co-Op Society. It was closed in 1990 and demolished to make way for the Plaza Mall. From left.
