The first gasworks in Palmerston North was brought into operation on February 26, 1889, and was owned and operated by a private company, J B Coates and Col. Ltd, of Melbourne. In 1914 the gasworks was bought by the Borough Council, and in 1922 a new gasworks on Napier Road was opened.
