Maurice Cohen, Mayor

Maurice Cohen (1862-1934) was Mayor 1905-1907 and a Borough Councillor 1887-1994. Born in Australia, he was educated in Christchurch and then joined the firm of Joseph Nathan & Co. Ltd., merchants of Wellington. He married one of Mr Nathan’s daughters. About 1886 he came to Palmerston North as Manager of the Ready Money Store, in The Square, which later became the United Farmers Co-op Association. Mr Cohen was also prominent in musical circles and was the first conductor of the Palmerston North Orchestral Society. He died in California, where, later in life, he had been living for part of each year.
