Description

Frederick Johansen’s bootmaking business was on the northern (Broadway) side of Main street East, Palmerston North. It stood immediately to the right of the original site of Thomas Griggs, the undertakers (whose business is visible on the left of this photograph). Johansen’s first bootmaker's shop was on the corner of Main Street West and Bourke Street. This shop seems to have been maintained by the company after the establishment of the shop, shown in this photograph, in the mid- 1890’s. About 1916 this Main street East factory seems to have passed to Mr Chartless and later George Arnold. The Bourke Street business disappears from the Post Office directories in the early thirties. Johansen is the figure third left (with dark apron and no cap), and Mr Hoddon one to the right (capless with light apron).
