Henry George Ashhurst, Esquire
More Info →- Description
-
Ashhurst was named after Henry George Ashhurst (1820-1882), director of the Emigrant and Colonists' Aid Corporation. He was a London colonial merchant who died at Richmond, Surrey, without ever having visited New Zealand. His sister Lucy made a significant donation of £100 toward the construction of St Mary Magdalene Anglican Church in Ashhurst and in 1899 also donated the church's font in memory of her brother. She is credited with correcting the spelling of the township's name from Ashurst (with a single h).
